Analysis Of A Blogging Rut

Every now and then, I find myself in a blogging rut. I trust that you know how it is: your brain is totally devoid of inspired content ideas, or your blogging spirit's simply not feelin' that extra pep in its step. Maybe you have a whole stockpile of post ideas stored away in a notebook somewhere, but even still, none of them sound particularly appealing.

Ages ago, I shared 3 ways to kick bloggers' block to the curb but this time around, I want to get to the root of the problem and see why it is that I'm feeling this type of way.

Monotony Of The Day To Day :: my biggest struggle post-graduation has been coming to terms with the fact that Mondays through Fridays, my days look the same. Although routine does ground me in many ways, it also starts to box me in when I'm having to come up with consistently new and different post ideas. I try to switch up small things on a daily basis: routes to the train, breakfast, outfits, and doing so always inspires a burst of creative energy.

Restlessness :: March was my month of laying low: no trips or major plans. While nice in small doses, I can feel myself getting a-n-t-s-y. Which is why last night, I found myself booking my second flight in two days. And tonight, I'm booking a third. I have a problem, yes, but for me... staying still for too long --> feeling restless --> overwhelming anxiety --> no bueno for creative work --> booking a flight to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Spring Is In The Air :: OK, so most counterintuitive thing ever, but I find that once the weather is at the top of its game, blog activity takes a nosedive. My theory here is that with the nicer and longer days, we're all out and about instead of hibernating under the heat of our laptops. While you'd think that this should create a bevy of content, the truth is that sometimes we're having so much fun that 1) we forget about documenting it altogether and/or 2) we're totally exhausted at the end of the day and are concerned with only getting to bed ASAP... not writing or editing photos or scheduling social media.

Parks & Rec :: Not even kidding. I'm in the middle of binging Parks & Rec... and I love it! Every night before bed, I tell myself I'll only watch one episode of Leslie Knope's shenanigans – then I'll put together a blog post and boom. Lights out! Every night, I fool myself. One episode turns to two, two turns to three, three turns to GO TO BED OR YOU'LL HATE YOURSELF TOMORROW.

Valid, right?

Fingers crossed that spilling all my blogging woes will be the spark that gets this party started again.

Tell me – what do you do when you're in the middle of a blogging rut? Do you ride it out? Take a break? #halpasisterout

PS. And ugh, I bet that brutal, heart-pounding Tarheels loss on Monday has NOTHING to do with the 'mehness' of this week. NOTHING. Sike, it has everything to do with it.

  1. Sometimes when I find myself in a rut I go out and just LIVE, I usually find some sort of blog post topic in the real world. Instead of racking my brain with something to come up with, I'll find inspiration at the grocery store, or a situation that happened that makes an idea come to life. Hope you find your way out, but don't be too hard on yourself, we all have them!

  2. I tend to turn to the glorious Pinterest for lists of Blog Post ideas, or I'll go onto Twitter and see what's trending. And when all else fails, you could always write about the amazingness that is Leslie Knope!

  3. I'm right there with you! But for me, I'm not lacking ideas, just the motivation to put in the work to get them written and published. A lot of blogs I read regularly seem to be low on new content lately so it must be something about this time of year!

  4. When I'm in the middle of a rut, I get off the internet, haha, which is bad because I am basically ignoring the problem instead of trying to solve it. So I make a list of potential topics, or just go and do something like go to a coffee shop or the beach.
